Employees Need Information About the Job

Summary

  • When onboarding someone, it's crucial to provide them with context about the job and the company to empower them to make good decisions.
  • I've learned to offer two kinds of context: company-specific and role-specific.
  • Company-specific context includes understanding the company's purpose, our hiring and firing processes, and how we manage expectations.
  • To keep everyone informed, I created a vision deck that I update every quarter with all this information.
  • After sharing the company context, it's beneficial to dive into role-specific context.
  • Skipping company context can lead to poor decisions by employees because they lack the necessary background information to choose wisely.
  • I make sure our team members have access to the same knowledge I have so they are capable of performing well and making informed decisions.

How To Take Action

I would suggest implementing a system similar to the "vision deck" to make sure everyone in your small business or personal growth journey is on the same page. This means every three months, take some time to write down important info about your business or goals. This can be why your business is there, how you decide on important things, or what you expect from yourself and others.

A good way of doing this is to start with the big picture. For a business, this could be why it was started and what its purpose is. For personal growth, it might be your big goals and values. This is like giving yourself or your team a map before starting the journey. It helps make better choices because you know where you're heading.

Once you've shared the big stuff, it's a good idea to focus on specific roles for a business or particular areas in personal growth. For each role or area, write down why it's important and what decisions or actions are needed. Imagine you're teaching someone who doesn't know anything about it – make it clear and simple.

Remember not to skip the big picture info—it's like trying to put a puzzle together without seeing the picture on the box. When people understand both the company and their own job, or when you understand both your overall goals and the specific steps to get there, making good choices becomes a lot easier.

Make sure you or your team has access to all this info. Everyone should be able to find it easily, like keeping it in a folder or a place where it can be seen often. Sharing knowledge is key—it helps everyone do their best and build a strong team or a strong personal plan.
